Cairns Rainforests – A long, drawn-out wet-season

Cairns Rainforests

Locals here in Cairns, Australia are wondering when and if the “wet season” will come.  Most years, from December to March we have huge amounts of rain (average of 1,900mm), but the total for this season is almost half this (1,021mm – B.O.M.).  The Tinaroo Dam is perhaps the best indicator of this year’s wet season, sitting on around 56%, when last year it was at 90.1 (B.O.M.)

While the region has lacked in heavy, torrential rain over short periods, short showers have been more current keeping the rainforest looking beautiful and lush.   These showers are still happening now, halfway through the month of May!!

In fact, from the tourist’s perspective, this has been a great year for Rainforest based tours such as our Paronella Park, Mamu Tropical Skywalk & Josephine Falls Tour and  Kuranda Tour.   Without the days and days of rain, it has been easy to access these beautiful places which are kept at the optimum by the intermittent showers.

Our guide took this shot yesterday whilst at Paronella Park.  It showcases just one of the many varieties of mushroom and fungi that can be seen in the rainforests of Far North Queensland throughout the wet season.

I’m sure the heavy rains will arrive, eventually and top up our Dams, until then lets enjoy this extended, lush season!!
